Once upon a time, there was a wonder admired by all. A vast garden filled with citrus trees
called the "Garden of the Lions" which was built within the medieval walls of Florence. This
garden was on canto degli aranci (the corner of the oranges) adjacent to the Chiaramontesi's
palace, at one time it contained 3,500 different varieties of citrus trees, which were given as
gifts to lovers, wayfarers and travellers who came from the warmest and most joyful parts of
the world. This garden was later sacrificed to make space for new houses.
